The lances and the lower melee defense - and the cost - are the big practical differences, but if you can get those juicy rear charges in, it's a thing of dark beauty. Shock cavalry has its place. Of course the AI likes to be clingy to stop you from getting more than the one charge in. Brush the haters off your awesome cape and charge harder.
