Are My Dreamcast's Days Numbered?? Raspberry Pi 4 vs Dreamcast Gameplay
Now that RetroPie supports the Raspberry Pi 4, I thought I'd give it a go to see how well it performs! I compare Pi 4 Dreamcast gameplay footage against an actual Dreamcast. Not only that, but I'm comparing everything with absolutely no hardware modifications and no overclocking, so what you see here is the minimum performance that you can expect (more or less) out of the box from a mid-range Pi 4 offering.
Just to throw a curveball, I throw in a Pi 3b as well to see how it used to perform. Will it be worth switching over from OG hardware to emulation on a Raspberry Pi 4 now?
The Dreamcast is outputting at 480p via VGA whereas the Pi 4 is at 1080p. I set the Pi 3 to output at 480p as well, so it's at the same resolution as the Dreamcast's native VGA, because it's a weaker board compared to the Pi 4. I wanted to give it a chance to prove itself.
The Flycast emulator is not normally provided with RetroPie but can be downloaded under the RetroPie's "experimental" section. This only takes a couple of minutes to do.
NOTE: All the games emulated on both Raspberry Pi's are games that I physically own on Dreamcast. Piracy ain't cool.
