Are we born with all of our neurons? | Know Brainers
I’m sure you’ve heard on more than one occasion that if you lose a brain cell, there’s no getting them back. But is this really true?
Dr. Lila Landowski, Neuroscientist, Professor, and VP of Science and Technology Australia, weighs in on the question! Turns out, our brain is capable of producing new neurons in a process called neurogenesis, and there are some science backed ways to stimulate the process.
The most potent way we know of is actually exercise, which has both short term and long term effects on our brain health. It increases blood flow to the brain, increases neuromodulators, and produces new neurons that eventually get integrated into our brain circuits.
But what about music? Studies have shown that listening to music has contributed to neurogenesis in mice and rats, and the same has been hypothesized for humans.
Our understanding of neurogenesis is still quite new, and as Dr. Lila says, the great frontier is actually in our heads!
