Art of Fighting (Intro)
Bout presents: Art of Fighting (Intro)
Art of Fighting is a trilogy of fighting games released for the Neo Geo platform in the early 1990s. It was the second fighting game franchise created by SNK, right after the Fatal Fury series, which takes place in the same fictional universe. The original Art of Fighting was released in 1992 and had two sequels: Art of Fighting 2 in 1994 and Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior in 1996.
It was SNK's first fighting game series featuring designs by illustrator Shinkiro, who later worked on the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series.
Art of Fighting was based on a story in manga format. In the game, the Sakazaki family goes through a crisis when they discover that Ryo Sakazaki's younger sister, Yuri, has been kidnapped. Ryo has the help of his best friend Robert Garcia, who is also his rival on the mat. The two begin to travel across the city in search of clues, finding unconventional subjects within strategic places such as Todoh's dojo, the outskirts of "Downtown", "Mack's Bar", and even a military base.
Ryo and Robert's encounters with the men guarding these places aren't very diplomatic—the conversation soon turns to teasing, and a fight ensues. The player's mission is therefore to discover the captivity where Yuri is held hostage, using everything she knows in martial arts.
Also known in-game as Hissatsu-waza. They are the secret techniques that are enabled when the player uses a certain combination of commands with the directional stick, combined with one of the buttons on the joystick. The player learns each of the various techniques throughout the game, whenever he becomes successful in the bonus stages (Bonus Game). Deadly techniques are important for the player to perform better during fights.
In Art of Fighting, opponents could be provoked, an unprecedented feature in a fighting game. To do so, all you had to do was press the D button to see Ryo calling his opponent into the fray. The "taunt mode" was useful as it made opponents lose a little of their "special life" (or "second energy bar") with each taunt, reducing their chances of attacking with techniques and special moves.
To be successful when humiliating the opponent, the player needed to keep a certain distance, because at the time of provocation, the opponent could easily get close and attack. And it wasn't just Ryo who had that privilege: all other Art of Fighting opponents had their way of scorning and humiliating Ryo and Robert.

In Brazil, Art of Fighting was much better known in the arcade version, which was similar to the home version released for the Neo Geo console. This was due to the high cost of the console and the cartridge in the country, as the product was imported, in addition to being considered luxurious and very sophisticated. Another way to get to know Art of Fighting was at rental companies, which at the time offered console rentals by the hour within their facilities.
Art of Fighting was very appreciated and played until, at least, the end of 1993. In the arcade, in 1992, Art of Fighting competed directly with Street Fighter II, which was very successful and more popular (Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting versions), as well as the (less sophisticated) World Heroes games, Atari's photorealistic Pit Fighter, and the good Fatal Fury series.
Later, in 1993, Art of Fighting still stood firm alongside the new Fatal Fury 2, the beautiful Samurai Shodown (game) (released by the same SNK), the innovative Savage Reign, and the violent but no less popular Mortal Kombat. In 1994, Art of Fighting begins to be quickly put aside, as they reach the arcades Samurai Shodown II, The King of Fighters '94 and Art of Fighting 2.
Thus, the Art of Fighting series ended definitively in 1996 with the release of Art of Fighting 3 – The Path of the Warrior (known in Japan as Ryuuko No Ken Gaiden). In order not to disappoint fans, some of the characters were revived in other more successful fighting games, such as The King of Fighters series, also produced by SNK.
