Assassination Attempt on King James: Gunpowder Plot
16James I of England is the first Stuart king of England and Scotland, who united the two kingdoms under his rule in 1603. James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and inherited the Scottish throne at the age of one, after his mother was forced to abdicate. He grew up under the tutelage of several regents and became a learned and cultured monarch, but also a firm believer in the divine right of kings. He faced many challenges and conflicts during his 22-year reign in England, such as the Gunpowder Plot, the rise of Puritanism, and the clash with Parliament over taxation and religious reforms. He also sponsored the translation of the Bible into English, known as the King James Version, and encouraged the colonization of North America.
