Assassin's Creed Origins is an action-adventure game with Role-playing video game elements played from a third-person perspective. Players complete linear scenario missions with set goals to progress through the story, and can freely explore the open world environment on foot, on horseback, on camel, horse-drawn vehicle, or boat. The open world includes all of Ancient Egypt, featuring vast deserts, oases, lakes, and ancient cities like Alexandria and Memphis. The game's main character, Bayek, can dive underwater and explore lakes and rivers, the first example of underwater exploration in the series since Black Flag in 2013. As players explore the world, they encounter various unplayable characters who need help from Bayek. . These side missions, which usually involve rescuing prisoners, defeating enemies, collecting items or investigating items of interest, often lead Bayek to interesting locations, where players can find treasure. Throughout the game, players can explore tombs and pyramids, raid bandit hideouts, solve riddles to find rare loot, and find synchronization points, which then unlock additional interesting locations that serve as fast-travel points. Other side activities the player can undertake include competing in gladiator arenas where the player fights waves of increasingly difficult enemy combinations culminating in boss fights, participating in chariot races, and solving stone circle puzzles.

Players earn experience points by performing actions such as completing campaign missions and side missions, discovering new locations, and defeating enemies. As players gain enough experience points, they can level up and earn skill points, which can unlock new abilities. The skill tree has three unique branches: Hunters, Warriors, and Seers. Hunter increases Bayek's ranged ability; Warrior makes Bayek a more capable melee fighter; Seer turns Bayek into a more lethal and efficient assassin. Missions and areas have recommended levels. Players must reach a certain level before completing it, or the game's enemies can easily defeat them. To further increase combat efficiency, Bayek's hidden knives, quivers, stabilizer gloves, bracers, breastplates, and tool pouches can be crafted using resources gathered from hunting wildlife, dismantling equipment, and attacking convoys carrying supplies. Bayek needs to earn coins by loot and complete the desired location. The coins can then be used to buy or upgrade weapons, clothing, and mounts. Crafting equipment and materials can be purchased from special vendors via loot boxes, although these boxes can only be purchased through in-game currency. However, some cosmetic items can only be purchased through Helix coins, which must be purchased with real-world currency.
