Assassin’s Creed Shadows is an action role-playing open world game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. The game is the fourteenth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and successor to Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is played from a third-person perspective with players choosing to control one of two main characters, Fujibayashi Naoe, a female shinobi, or Yasuke, an African samurai. Each character has unique gameplay styles, allowing players to approach missions in multiple ways. The game will have new enhancements such as breakable objects, a bamboo stick for breathing in shallow water, a grappling hook for parkour, prone movement and abilities to manipulate shadows. The games missions will be non-linear allowing players to freely choose how they approach a mission with the changing of seasons providing different options.
Assassin's Creed Shadows takes place in feudal Japan, during the beginning of the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the end of the Sengoku period, a time of intense civil war. The game explores the regions of Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, and the Iga province in central Japan, as well as historical castles, landmarks and strongholds. The urbanization of Japan at this time is shown with busy ports, samurai districts, and distinct architecture, all of which plays a role in parkour and exploration in the game. The introduction of Christianity from Jesuit missionaries and new technologies such as cannons and long guns by Portuguese traders also help shape the game's environment and narrative.
