The important parts are the beginning where it's actually beneficial to stay near the MG bot longer (also trying to make it lose as little DPS as possible by positioning yourself so enemies move less while focusing enemies in a way that reduce the amount of turning it has to do and then sticking on the shield pad for as long as you possibly can, there's obviously the matter of powerups spawning far from you but that's almost down to luck, I don't think you can reasonably expect to manipulate it on the fly.
