Asterix in "Asterix & The Secret Mission" - Sega Master System - Full Playthrough
The great druid Getafix has run out of ingredients to make the magic potion which gives the Gaul’s superhuman strength over the invading Roman army. He therefore sends the village's best two warriors Asterix and Obelix to search the world for the magical ingredients before the Roman’s realize that they are defenceless. This was released for the Master System and Game Gear in 1993, but only in Europe and Brazil – I’m guessing that Asterix’s popularity is limited to certain regions.
As with the previous Asterix Master System game, this is a 2D side scrolling platformer where you are given the option as playing as either Asterix or Obelix in a level. With each stage being different depending on the character that you choose, for instance on the pirate stages Asterix surfs over the waves to get to the Pirate Ship whilst the heavier Obelix simply swims underwater. Just like the last game (and the comics) their abilities are different with Asterix unable to smash blocks unless he has drunk the magic potion, but is small enough to squeeze through tiny gaps. Obelix having been dropped into the magic potion as a baby, permanently has superhuman strength, but his size makes manoeuvring the levels a much trickier affair. If you ever get stuck on a section it is sometimes best to just switch to the other character and try out the other level for the other character, because it may be easier. I personally believe the game is easier to complete as Asterix due to his smaller size and double jump, which makes the bosses easier to handle.
Asterix and Obelix look great and instantly recognisable from their comic book counterparts. There also seems to be a lot more animation given to the sprites this time around (and they were very good to begin with), with little additions such as the way Asterix flaps his feet in the air when he is drinking the magic potion harkens back to the original books that I used to read. The only thing that I would say is that despite it looking nicer there is a lot more slowdown this time around, but it doesn’t affect the game play much as it is not meant to be a fast paced platformer like Sonic. The controls are incidentally spot on - you'll never feel like you died from broken game mechanics.
I loved the original Asterix as a kid and unfortunately I never owned it at the time, but I was able to find this sequel and thus I am familiar with it far more than anything else in the Asterix Master System trilogy. Whilst this is a great platformer to own and play for the Master System, I would say that it is inferior to the original. It does feel shorter, around half the length of the original I feel and there are notably less bosses – 2 if you’re Asterix and three if you’re Obelix. This is despite the improvements to the visuals and the overall great gameplay through, I would still recommend it but the first game is actually cheaper and easier to find.
