Streets of Rage was made by Sega in 1991 in response to the Final Fight series that was being released on the rival SNES at the time. This is the original version of the game for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis and Sega later handled ports to the Master System and Game Gear, which cut out various elements from this version in order to fit. To be honest these days Streets of Rage is available on virtually every console available via re-releases, emulation jobs and Sega compilation packs.
The game is a scrolling beat em up where you control one of three characters and you have to defeat every enemy on the level before facing off against the boss at the end. The three fighters have a similar move set, but they do play differently with Adam being the best fighter but incredibly slow which makes some of the boss battles a right problem due to his sluggish pace, Axel who has a useless jump attack and Blaze who is the weakest of the three, but is the most nimble. Whilst the characters don’t have a traditional special move, you can call on your friends in the police department to literally fire bomb the scene. In the Master System version the heroes jump out of the way, in here they just stand there like superman being hailed with bullets.
The game is very easy to pick up and play, the controls are responsive and it’s really fun to throw a baddy into a group of his friends. Yuzo Koshiro did an excellent job with the music which still sounds good today and whilst the visuals aren’t the best on the Mega Drive they are still nicely animated and the stages have plenty of characteristics to keep them fresh such as the pot holes on the bridge, the conveyers belts in the factory and the excellent elevator stage near the end where you can simply just throw people off to their eventual doom.
I have completed this game numerous time and I really do like replaying it once every so often. It is truly a Sega classic and whilst it isn’t the best game in the series, it is still worth your time. In doing this video I had numerous problems trying to beat this game because of one particular enemy, it is the two Blaze like women on level 5. I kept on dying on the their re-battle right before the final boss and this is about 50 minutes into the game, I can’t tell you how annoying it is to die right before the final boss, losing so many continues trying to beat them.
