Astro Fantasia is a classic space shooter from the early 80s, where you take command of a lone fighter spaceship to face off against a relentless fleet of adversaries, in two distinct playing environments that switch back and forth.
In the initial stage, you'll confront an alien onslaught, taking down anything that crosses your path. In the subsequent one, your mission is to dismantle the mothership by targeting three distinct sections of the vessel.
Not a walk in the park, anyway. I had the good fortune to conquer it on my first attempt without any casualties, only to falter in the second loop, tantalizingly close to obliterating the mothership once more. But it's no big deal, considering I'd already completed the game once. Nevertheless, I'll need to vanquish that lingering sense of frustration by revisiting the game at some point down the road, lol.
Fun fact: Astro Fantasia was part of the DECO Cassette System, a groundbreaking arcade platform launched by Data East in late 1980. This system made history as the pioneering standardized arcade platform that empowered arcade owners to effortlessly swap out different games at their establishments. Other notable titles included in this system were Burger Time, Bump 'n' Jump, Disco No. 1, Lock 'n' Chase and Terranean (longplay coming).
