Let's talk about high expectations being crushed and dreams shattered. As a fan of Big George (when he made his comeback in the '80s, I was over the moon), I couldn't wait to get my hands on Foreman for Real, back in the day. When it finally happened and I loaded the cartridge, I was in awe of the graphics – the boxers, their faces, they looked like real people. But then, the disappointment set in...
The boxers in the game move at a snail's pace. It's as if you're trying to drag a balking bull when you move them around. They're just as slow when it comes to throwing, ducking, and blocking punches. However, what really put me off was that the game is ultra-easy, even on the hardest setting. The only skill you need to win is button-mashing, or rather, just keep throwing the same kind of punch until it lands.
When your opponent finally starts blocking it (he'll take a while), then throw a different shot. You'll need to wear him down, but eventually he'll go down. In the process, you also absorb a lot of strikes, but the punches you eat don't deter you from attacking in the slightest. The only boxer who can give you a bit of a hard time is Big George. He may knock you down, but you'll end up dispatching him anyway.
When a game has such poor gameplay, I believe there's no point in discussing the modes and other features. That would only add to the frustration. In sum, it's a title that left a bad taste in my mouth, and believe me, given the high expectations I had at the time, it's probably the most disappointing boxing game I've ever played.
