Astronomers have directly detected a massive exoplanet.
In a new study published in Science, an international team of astronomers has discovered a new gas giant planet using direct imaging techniques. Named HIP99770b, this planet is a hot, giant and moderately cloudy planet that orbits its star at a distance similar to Saturn and Uranus around our Sun. With about 15 times the mass of Jupiter, it is not a good prospect for a habitable world, but it does offer an analogy to our own Solar System with a cold "debris disk" of ice and rock. Join us as we explore the mysteries of this newly discovered planet and its immediate environment.
