The physical nature of spacetime is a difficult concept to grasp. Before Einstein, we believed that space and time were absolute and could be described by a set of coordinates. However, Einstein's theory of relativity showed that space and time were relative and depended on the observer's motion through it. This concept changed our understanding of the Universe and led to the idea of spacetime as a fabric that can be curved by the presence of matter and energy. Whether spacetime is a real, physical thing or just a calculational tool is still a matter of debate among physicists.
