Atlas is the new venture from the Ark: Survival Evolved team, but this time instead of dinosaurs there are pirates, and you are a pirate. Here is our Atlas gameplay and first impressions from the Early Access build.

We’ve only played a few hours of Atlas - still nursing our Christmas food babies - but we will be bringing out a full Atlas review soon on the channel once we’ve sank a bit more time into it. And it’s quite clear that this game goes deep and needs a good amount of time to be able to succeed and learn your way around.

You are a Pathfinder, which is basically just a pirate, and the game sets you up in a pretty standard survival situation. You must gather resources, punch trees and rocks, pick up fibres, and hunt down animals to create tools, weapons, clothes, and more. Your first task is to collect enough supplies to exchange them for your first raft. Sounds simple enough, right? Well apparently not for us.

Here we do our absolute best to get as close as we can to actually succeeding over the first challenge, the raft. Hunting animals, jumping on other players rafts, making clothes, setting seagulls on fire, getting trampled by elephants. Everything you’d expect to see really. What more could you want?

Atlas is available on the Steam store right now. It’s pretty janky at the moment, and still in early access, and the first week of user reviews aren’t looking good. We’ll be bringing out a full Atlas review in the next coming months to see how our first impressions have differed from playing a little bit more - and getting heaps better at the game.
