The Windows version of Spiderweb Software's last Avernum game (which came out for Mac OS in 2009) has finally been released, and here's some gameplay from the demo.

This video shows the tutorial section which, true to RPG conventions, involves the killing of rats. Compared to Avernum 5 I feel this game does an even better job of easing you into the controls and demonstrating how various basic gameplay mechanics work (the numerous tooltips are especially welcome), which means that even Avernum neophytes should be able to get into it easily.

As always with Jeff Vogel's indie RPGs a lot of assets have been reused from previous games in the series, but there has also been a comparatively substantial upgrade to the graphics engine and interface. The game now supports resolutions up to 1280*1024 (which is what is used in this video), but can also be played in a window and/or with lower detail settings if you happen to have an older PC.

For Spiderweb fans and anyone else hungering for some old school turn-based dungeon crawling the release of Avernum 6 is surely great news.

For those of you who haven't heard about it, Jeff Vogel writes a very readable and funny blog called the Bottom Feeder:
