Remembrances of Games Past, Part #18 - Halo: Combat Evolved (2003) (PC) (Bungie/Gearbox Software)
The Windows version of Halo 1 was a decent enough shooter which unfortunately had some technical problems associated with being a port of a by then two year old console title. Gearbox Software mostly did a good job but there were substantial performance issues even on comparatively good gaming rigs, which seemed very strange at the time since Halo's graphics weren't particularly impressive compared to most PC-only shooters released in 2003. Moreover, the game's original developer Bungie can definitely be faulted for an overtly simplistic level design, as Halo's endless grey corridors seemed to belong in a much older game.
All that being said, the first Halo was not a bad game. Some of the levels are impressive in both scope and scale, the enemy AI is solid and the vehicles were a nice and at the time seldom seen addition to the standard FPS gameplay. I never tried out the multiplayer (still only had dial-up connection back in 2003), but when I installed the game again yesterday I was pleased to find out that the online community is still going strong 7 years after the release of this port.
