Avoid these problems with your all in one CPU cooler
127I'm in the middle of building a new PC and capturing footage to show people how to do it and how to install the Corsair H170i Elite Capellix XT Cooler. To be thorough I'm trying to show how to install that cooler on an Intel LGA 1700 socket motherboard (Z790) and a AM5 motherboard as well. Two very different setups. But I managed to damage the thermal paste, so I thought that might make an interesting demo of what NOT to do when installing a CPU cooler.
Many modern CPU coolers include pre-applied thermal paste, so you can just pop them on with the right mounting brackets and then happily get on with your life. However, sometimes you need to prepare the cooler before you install it. This cooler comes with pre-install Intel brackets which need to be swapped for AMD ones if you're installing in AM4 or AM5. Then you need to ensure you don't damage the thermal paste (like I did) before finishing your build.
So keep that plastic cap and put it back on. I'd recommend cutting it into shape.
Other problems that can easily occur include damaging the paste when installing or simply not mounting the cooler properly. Something as simple as not tightening the thumbscrews enough can result in problems with overheating CPUs (or thermal throttling).
So I often recommend this...
- Download Cinebench and HWMonitor or HWInfo and run a benchmark with Cinebench
- Check benchmark score against "normal" ones to see if yours is significantly lower
- Check max temps to ensure CPU is not too hot (and GPU while you're there)
If you CPU is in the high 90s, then there might be a problem. A simple solution might just be checking the pump head thumbscrews are tight enough.
If that doesn't work, you can try removing the thermal paste and applying better thermal paste, ensuring good coverage.
