7Not every invasion will require you to engage the host. In fact, you'll find that a lot of hosts are perfectly capable of going off somewhere and getting themselves killed. So did you earn the victory? The game would argue that yes you did, at least enough to justify giving you the invasion rewards of souls and humanity.
So don't sweat it if your counter isn't at 99 after invading for a few sessions. You'll get there.
