Backbone: Why The Ending Should Matter
Backbone is probably one of the best examples of a story with perfect set-up and potential. It's also a great analysis of how development issues and lack of experience can result in an odd ending that people universally disliked.
In July 2021, game developer Eggnut released their first game "Backbone". This detective noir transports us to a dystopian version of Vancouver where Howard Lotor, an anthropomorphic raccoon, investigating what appears to be a simple case of a cheating spouse. What shows to be the perfect set-up, transforms into an odd Lovecraftian story about an alien artifact.
This episode will be our own investigation; follow detectives Storms and Leonard as they unravel what went wrong behind the scenes, including an interview with the game's director and writer (courtesy of Harry Mitchell at Overlord).
