In this guide, we're diving deep into one of the most strategic encounters in Baldur’s Gate 3—taking down Flind, the Gnoll Warlord, using your Illithid powers. If you’re not in the mood for a full-on fight and want to use your mind control abilities to wipe out a gnoll pack, this is the perfect moment to flex those Illithid muscles.
When you come across Flind at the Risen Road during the "Find the Missing Shipment" quest, instead of going straight into combat, use your Illithid tadpole powers. Once the cutscene triggers, you'll be able to search her mind and take control. By passing the Illithid checks, you can dominate Flind and force her to turn on her own gnolls. It’s a wickedly satisfying moment—watching Flind, who is normally the alpha of her pack, tear into her own gnolls at your command.
After the gnolls head into the cave and kill the people inside, Flind’s hunger won’t be satisfied. Here’s where you can push her even further—convince her to finish off the remaining gnolls. Under your control, Flind will kill the rest of her pack, leaving the battlefield clear. But why stop there? Once she’s done with the gnolls, it’s time to end her reign yourself. With one final blow, you can bring Flind’s story to a close.
Now, aside from the tactical satisfaction of taking control of the encounter, defeating Flind comes with some sweet loot. The biggest prize is the Shattered Flail, a powerful weapon that deals 1d6+1 bludgeoning damage, along with an extra 2 acid damage per hit. It’s also enchanted with a +2 bonus, making it one of the strongest early-game flails you can get your hands on. Alongside the Shattered Flail, you’ll collect some basic gnoll loot like bones and skulls, and of course, the all-important experience points for leveling up.
Using this Illithid mind-control strategy allows you to avoid a tough battle and clean up the battlefield efficiently, showing just how powerful your tadpole powers can be in shaping the game world.
