Synopsis

It's been 31 years since I played this game, it is your typical interactive role playing game from the 1980s. This format had been in use from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s. There were other formats, like the isometric role playing formats. Games like Ultima Series, Battletech, Final Fantasy, Dungeons & Dragons, etc were in such isometric formats. You had the still picture first person perspective games like Bard's Tale, Circuit's Edge, Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry, Wasteland, etc. The formats were all a reflection of the technologies which were available at the time.

In Bard's Tale, you choose a character and you go out into a simulated world. You get experience points after you kill enemies, you get money, and you build up your character. The game does get repetitive, because you see the same enemies and the same building over and over again. You use the arrow keys to move. At first it is rather awkward, because the back arrow key is used to move forward. This was one of the first role playing games I ever played on my Apple 2c or on any system. I played Bard's Tale for hours and hours, but after days of playing it I got bored of it.

You did have text driven role playing games from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. GURPs was the last text driven role playing game, and it was highly addictive. The still picture first person role playing games were replaced in favor of 3d isometric role playing games after the mid 1990s, and today we have the 3d first or 3rd person role playing interactive game. Technology really broth force these changes. The goal was to create a game which was to simulate the real world, but in the 1980s and 1990s that technology didn't exist. Games, like Fallout 3, Fallout 4, World of Warcraft were the result of all these past efforts.
