Desktop Processors vs Laptop Processors Geekbench 3 and 4 Benchmarks
Desktop processors are about 25% to 33% faster than its laptop counterparts. In addition, laptop processors run at a slower clock speed than its desktop counterpart. Here is an example, a Intel I7 6700k has a clock speed of 4.0 ghzs, and the I7-6700HQ has a base clock speed of 2.6 ghzs. However, when the I7-6700HQ is in turbo mode, it can reach a clock speed of 3.5 ghzs. It is never to sustain such a clock speed, or you will have major heat problems. This is why mobile devices throttle, the speed can fluctuate from 2.6 ghzs to 3.5 ghzs. On the other hand, a desktop processor can sustain the highest speed for longer periods of time depending on the cooling system.
From my experience, my I7-4790 desktop processor reached a maximum temperature of 68 degrees Celsius or 154 degrees Fahrenheit when I played a game like Bioshock Infinite with maximum settings. My laptop with a I7-4710HQ processor had a maximum temperature of 84 Celcius or 183.2 Fahrenheit running a game like War Thunder at medium settings. It got so hot, I could feel the heat on my left hand where the fan exhaust outlet was located. I don't think my gaming laptop could sustain such a temperature for a long period of time without having problems later on. If I played War Thunder on my I7-4790 desktop with medium settings, my system's temperature wouldn't go over 52 Celsius or 125.6 Fahrenheit. If I played a Warthunder with the highest settings, the temperature would go to a maximum of let's say 74 Celsius or 165.2 Fahrenheit. There is a big difference, the desktop is clearly more powerful. In any machine, the power plant and the cooling system are very important. The laptops lack an adequate cooling system, so they tend to get hot very fast. This could increase the wear and tear on the machine. Another limiting factor is the power input into the processor, a I7-6700 has a TDP of 130 watts, and a I7-6700HQ has a TDP of 45 watts. You see the difference. The I7-6700HQ is very efficient using only 33.3% of the power of the I7-6700k, but it is only 28 to 30% slower.
