1,491Batman and Judge Dredd crossed over four times between 1991 and 1998. The first book, 1991's Batman / Judge Dredd: Judgment on Gotham is probably the most famous. The main reason there were four different books is because the sequel to this, Die Laughing took five years to make!
In this video I'll take a look at the four books which make up this series. The creators, the history, the context and I'll throw in a few takes of my own. Specifically, how the whole "Batman is a fascist" debate falls through when you plop Batman down in Mega City One. Compared to Judge Dredd, Batman isn't remotely fascist. And this gives us an opportunity to look at the differences between these two characters.
The first book, Judgement on Gotham is genuinely really good on all fronts. Die Laughing is a decent sequel which doesn’t do much more than retreat the same beats as Judgement but with different characters. And the two interquel episodes are loud bombastic one-shots which strike a balance between DC and 2000 AD. Yeah, they’re good fun! But also, they’re a great window into some of the lesser-known British Invasion creators which DC / Vertigo were hoovering up at this point. If for no other reason, you should read these for the fully-painted interiors. This is the sort of thing which really didn’t survive into the modern era. As soon as digital colouring became faster and cheaper than traditional art, painted interiors became extremely rare. So for these stories to be almost entirely painted by some of the best names in the biz makes Batman x Judge Dredd a real landmark comic.
