Putting the PS1 & Saturn versions of the Bullfrog classic Magic Carpet side by side.

I used to play a shit ton of MC on the PC back in the day & I remember it looking incredible for it's time so it was very interesting for me to see just how well the console ports faired.

Going back to it after all these years was a bit of a shock as I'd forgotten just how terrible the draw distance was. Something that would have been totally acceptable back in 1994 though as 3D games were still a new thing.

The part that still makes this game impressive today is it's terrain manipulation.

The idea of digging holes or building hills in real time without the use of heavy scripting is still struggled with today. In fact the last game to come out that attempted anything like it was Fracture in 2008. So when Bullfrog put out Magic Carpet in 94 & it let you literally create mountains, dig valleys, burn trees & scar the entire landscape beyond recognition (as much as you wanted, anywhere you wanted)... yeah, it was fucking mind blowing!

As much as I like this game I never could play it for too long as it gives me motion sickness which is really odd as it's the only thing I know of that does. If you are interested in playing this I recommend picking up a copy of the PC version, the game looks fine on the consoles but the controls are super sluggish, and switching between spells is awkward & leaves you vulnerable. You need a mouse & keyboard to get the most out of it.
