Battlefield 2 in 2023
i know hardly anyone will read this but these videos are mainly for my own entertainment purposes, if others find them enjoyable its a bonus, time for a rant
in 2006 my relationship with my partner of 7 years was in the toilet, & in only what i can blame on depression, I had become a console gamer (burn)
in what felt like the lowest point in my life, i remember walking into my room & staring at my old PC, (an upgraded i686), janky to the point the case no longer fit on it & was filled with a flood of memories of happier times... playing shooters like Q3 & UT at LAN Parties back in the late 90s
thats when I decided it was time to build myself a new PC, i cant remember the specs, but it was a quad core of some variety & a massive upgrade over my mid 90s dinosaur, only problem i now faced was how to play a LAN game, i only had 2 other friends & both were utter noobs on mouse & keyboard & 3 player Quake would get old fast
it suddenly dawned on me that Broadband internet was widely avaliable in 2006 & in my absence online gaming had turned from a lagfest in the late 90s to the new LAN Party of the mid 2000s
with my new PC & zippy internet connection it was time get back in the saddle but there was a problem... all my old games were dead online, Quake 3/Unreal Tournament/Jedi Knight....where was everyone?
i decided to make a trip to the store (yes PC games used to be purchased at brick & mortar stores) & asked the clerk for a copy of Counter Strike, as i had heard it was popular, "sold out & discontinued" (looking back these really were the dark ages) but he handed me a copy of Battlefield 2 & simply said "this is newer & better... you will love it" he wasnt wrong
I remember my first match, i loaded up the game & hit "Quick Match" or "play now" or whatever it was called, assuming it was some sort of tutorial mode, talk about being thrown in the deep end... i didnt know where to go or what to do but was surrounded by utter chaos, then it dawned on me, these soldiers running around were all other players, actual people... 64 players in a single battle, holy crap! this is the best thing i have ever seen! needless to say i was hooked hard, infact i dont think i played a single other game for the next 3 years
i broke up with my partner 2 years later & tbh if it wasnt for Battlefield 2 id probably have necked myself lol (maybe not that funny) but needless to say this game will always hold a special place in my heart
