Battlefield 3 Playthrough - Part 01 - How Do You Measure Up?
This generation, on the PS3, as well as with the generation before that, the PS2, I've experienced a lot of shooters. First person, third person, tactical, action, you name it, I've probably played it, or a variation thereof. So, how does this measure up, against all of them (and not just COD)?
Take, for example, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It was an FPS with minimal story, and an open world approach to warfare. In the game, you could pretty much do whatever you want, whenever you wanted to. However, the only twist was that if you got into any sort of engagement, all your adventuring could be put short with two well placed shots.
In Ghost Recon, a hybrid shooter (which combined aspects of first person and third person), you had to work with your squad mates to survive encounters, or work through situations that only a specialized member could successfully navigate. The engagements you get into could get visceral, but since the game works within its own pseudo sandbox, once you got the hang of where the majority of the enemies were in an area, you could exploit the game, easily.
COD, it's an arcade shooter. It's story doesn't make since, but you don't play COD to get wrapped in the struggle of one man's ideals against another's. You just point your weapon at the thing(s) you want to make go away, and just make it happen. It's short, simple, and to the point. Like a quickie with the woman in the red dress.
So, where does Battlefield lie on the field of military shooters? Will it be more of a sim, where only several shots can kill you, or one if it connects the right way? Will it be more of an arcade type of experience with regenerating health, your character doing everything, with any piece of equipment, or you taking point for every breach the game throws at you? Or will you have to rely on your squad mates to survive through nearly impossible odds, where you're outgunned and outclassed, and only your mental prowess stands between survival and death?
But enough of me rambling on... it's time to get down to business.
