Battleships And Destroyers - Comments On Battleship AP Changes
99Here are my thoughts on the changes WG has proposed to Battleship AP. Several members of the YT community have come out with their videos and quite honestly, I thought it would be inappropriate to not throw my two cents in! Maybe it's my false sense of value! :D
Anyway, it boils down to this. The situations in which normal penetrating hits happen to DD's are situations in which that DD is most likely to be dead anyway because they are spotted by a ship which means sub 11km ranges if you throw in radar. At these ranges, a Destroyer has more than a few tricks in it's bag to avoid incoming fire and mitigate damage taken. The "normal pen" from a BB AP shell is a consequence of a legitimate game mechanic: Shell fuse time and the removal of the ability to normal pen a destroyer takes some player skill out of the game. Good BB captains never feared destroyers, and good destroyer captains never get caught out on a BB like that.
Even if you do remove it, I will still NOT shoot HE out of those guns. The only way to effectively use HE in a BB is to know you are going to engage a DD soon and switch to it, or to spec into expert loader. If you are clairvoyant enough to know where a DD is before they appear then you are probably going to avoid that engagement in the first place since he has the initiative. For those who suddenly happen upon a DD at close range, well, I can guarantee zero of you are going to switch to HE without first shooting the load of AP.
In doing so, even if you get 3-4 overpens, you are still doing 20%-30% of their HP pool in one salvo. You still have the potential to one shot some destroyers with certain ships due to the number of rounds in the air AND you've not really drastically improved DD survivability because chances are they are going to DIE in that case anyway unless you are by yourself, at which point you deserve what you get! :P
