Target Acquisition is a miserable mode to do late-game. In the medium weight phase of the game, it's not bad since your mechs are already fast enough to get to extraction, but when you're taking assaults, it can be tricky unless you already know in advance where to go to extract and move towards there from the start. If worst comes to worst, you can eject a pilot if he's not going to make it. You'll lose whatever equipment is mounted in the head and I believe the pilot takes an injury, but he won't have to be in extraction in order to win the mission.

I've found it's really handy to take a light and have it move to the furthest capture zone. A +2 or +3 hit defense gyro on a dedicated light pilot (bonus evasion, and +6 hit defense from the tree) make you incredibly tough to hit, so you don't have to worry so much about him surviving a turn. It's expensive, but surprisingly safe, as long as you STAY OUT OF MELEE RANGE. Remember that melee attacks ignore evasion, so while your light mech might survive a single hit, it's still a high chance you'll lose a chunk of your mech. This Phoenix Hawk is one such a build, and I've thrown enough upgraded equipment on it that it makes for a disgusting assassin as well.
