Bennu asteroid with the power of 22 atomic bombs
The asteroid Bennu is one of the most studied celestial objects by NASA due to its trajectory that brings it close to Earth every six years. Although the probability of impact is low, NASA estimates that there is a 1 in 1,750 chance that Bennu will collide with Earth on September 24, 21822. The impact would have a power equivalent to 22 atomic bombs.
The OSIRIS-REx mission, launched in 2016, collected samples of the asteroid in 2020 and returned to Earth in 2023. These samples are crucial to understanding Bennu's composition and developing strategies to divert its path, if necessary5.
