Best OBS Settings for Streaming 2025 – Complete Guide
In this video I show you the best OBS settings for Streaming 2025. For streaming it is best to use your GPU’s inbuilt video encoder. This will allow you to stream with less impact on your PC’s performance. Unfortunately, not all PCs have the option to use your GPU for video encoding. However, most modern gaming PC’s will have the option. In cases where no GPU video encoding options are available you will need to use the standard x264 option.
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card then you will want to use the NVIDIA NVENC HEVC option if you have it. Alternatively, you can use NVIDIA NVENC H.264. Both options work perfectly fine when streaming with OBS. However, the HEVC video encoder does a better job at compressing the video quality. This often means the stream will be better quality as the bitrate is being used more efficiently.
Additionally, the best choice for an AMD graphics card is AMD HW H.265. However, this option may not be available depending on your GPU or where you are trying to stream. If you don’t have it, then you will need to use the AMD HW H.264 video encoder. Again, this is more than good enough for streaming.
When it comes to OBS streaming settings you will want to ensure you get the rate control and bitrate correct. The best rate control for streaming is CBR as it provides constant quality. This allows your stream to maintain high quality over time and make the most of your bitrate.
The best bitrate for streaming is 8000 for Twitch, and 10000 for YouTube. However, if your upload speed allows it then you can use an even higher bitrate for YouTube. Essentially, your bitrate controls the quality of your stream. With bitrate the higher the better.
Although Twitch restricts you to a bitrate of 6000, using 8000 can allow your stream to be better quality when resources are available. Additionally, if you are a Twitch partner you will almost always benefit from setting your bitrate to 8000.
Additionally, when choosing your bitrate you will need to consider your upload speed. This is as your upload speed controls how much information you can send or stream at any given time. If you have an upload speed of at least 14mbps and are streaming to YouTube then you can set your bitrate to 10000. Additionally, if you are streaming to Twitch and have an upload speed above 12mbps then you will want to set your bitrate to 8000. However, if your upload speed falls below these guides then you will need to adjust your bitrate to suit.
If you have a laggy stream then there are a few possible solutions. One of the common solutions is to simply lower your bitrate. Although this isn’t ideal, your stream may be lagging due to your upload speed fluctuating, or not being able to keep up with your selected bitrate. Additionally, you can also try changing the Preset setting for Streaming. Using P4: Medium (Medium Quality) can help prevent your stream from lagging. Although it may affect the quality of your stream, it won’t negatively impact it too much.
Another solution for stream lag or dropped frames is to set the OBS process priority to Above Normal. While this can help, it can also cause performance issues on your PC. If you are playing games on the same PC you are streaming from then it’s likely you will notice an impact on your game. This is typically evident in your game’s FPS. It’s also not recommended to use the High process priority option because of possible issues.
After you having finished inputting the best OBS settings for streaming, be sure to click the Apply button. This will ensure your stream settings are saved and will be used when you start streaming. Any changed settings will require you to click the Apply button again to confirm.
