Beyond The Wall - Early Access Watcher -
Disclosure: This game copy was bought by the reviewer.
This week saw the release of two games with the word "Wall" in it, so to start off I decided to look beyond this early access title's warning signs. What I received was a poorly functioning wave shooter with house construction built in, for some reason. The game boils down to the player spawning slow moving waves of zombies while gaining points to buy better weapons and build up defenses in a square, while also evacuating the same NPC who runs up to the terminal at the end of each round.
It is incredible shallow with the majority of the content being the different weapons. The enemy only varies by the degree of acceleration and weapons vary from piss poor to one-shot powerhouses. Difficulty seems to be based on the number of enemies rather than the increased health per level, so I stuck to using my machete for obvious reasons. If you die, you simply re-spawn back at the terminal, making me wonder if there is a failure state. As far as housing goes, I pressed every button trying to get items to rotate and never could figure it out. Outside of the turrets, their is no real purpose for the housing element anyway.
I knew what I was getting into before buying, but I would have at least thought the city would have been explore-able. Turns out, you are stuck in a small square outside a city wall trying to fight the urge to use a bullet to end the monotony. Bottom-line, I cannot recommend this. Sticking free or purchased unity assets together does not make a game.
