The dispute began in 2018 when a Twin Galaxies community member accused Mitchell of achieving his scores on a modified arcade board, which would be a violation of the organization's rules. Twin Galaxies conducted its own investigation and initially concluded that the images shown in the videos of Mitchell's games could not have been produced by an unmodified arcade board. This led to Mitchell's scores being removed from the Twin Galaxies website, and he was banned from competing on their competitive leaderboards.

Mitchell's scores are visible in this historical database, but they do not appear on the live version of Twin Galaxies' Donkey Kong records.
