In the shadow of Black Wind Mountain, a tale of ambition, greed, and ancient enmity unfolds, weaving together the fates of various characters driven by their desires. The chapter begins with Guangzhi and Guangmou, two disciples serving under Elder Jinchi at Guanyin Temple. Guangzhi, a wolf guai yearning to live as a human, was sent by Black Bear Guai to study under Jinchi. Despite his good intentions, Guangzhi was naive, easily manipulated by Guangmou, a cunning disciple who harbored deep resentment toward Jinchi for favoring Guangzhi.
Guangmou’s jealousy festered as he watched Jinchi’s attention focus more on Guangzhi. The arrival of the Tang Monk and Sun Wukong at the temple provided Guangmou with an opportunity to set his plans in motion. Jinchi, once a devout monk, was overwhelmed by greed upon seeing the Tang Monk’s golden kasaya. This robe, a symbol of purity and spiritual attainment, became the object of Jinchi’s obsession. Seizing this moment, Guangmou convinced Guangzhi to aid in a sinister plot: they would set fire to the Tang Monk’s quarters, killing him and taking the kasaya for themselves. Guangzhi, eager to prove his worth and repay Jinchi’s teachings, agreed.
Sun Wukong pursued Black Bear Guai relentlessly, but the demon was clever and elusive. Despite Wukong’s best efforts, Black Bear Guai managed to evade capture, using his knowledge of the mountain’s terrain to his advantage. Frustrated and realizing he needed assistance, Wukong turned to Bodhisattva Guanyin for help. Guanyin, understanding the gravity of the situation, agreed to intervene.
To subdue Black Bear Guai, Guanyin devised a clever plan. She transformed herself into Old Lingxuzi, a figure Black Bear Guai trusted, while Wukong morphed into an elixir. Disguised as a trusted ally, Guanyin offered the elixir to Black Bear Guai during a celebration. Unaware of the deception, Black Bear Guai consumed the elixir, only for Wukong to revert to his true form inside the demon’s stomach. The pain was unbearable, and Black Bear Guai, now in his true form—a massive black bear—begged for mercy. He was forced to surrender and was bound by Guanyin’s divine headband, similar to the one Wukong wore.
With his defeat, Black Bear Guai was taken to Guanyin’s realm, Mount Putuo in the Southern Sea, where he was appointed as a guardian deity. Despite his newfound role, Black Bear Guai’s ambitions were far from over. His time as a guardian was short-lived, as he soon found himself embroiled in the celestial court’s efforts to subdue Wukong once again. During this time, he ran away with a piece of Wukong’s relic, hoping to use it to reestablish his dominion over Black Wind Mountain and Guanyin Temple.
Black Bear Guai’s return to Black Wind Mountain was marked by a series of disastrous experiments. Using the relic, he attempted to resurrect Old Lingxuzi and Elder Jinchi, but his lack of magical aptitude led to horrifying results. Elder Jinchi was bound to his hoard of gold, becoming a tortured spirit, while Old Lingxuzi was transformed into a vampiric being. Black Bear Guai’s actions only deepened the corruption within Black Wind Mountain, as the mountain became a place where the lines between demons and deities blurred.
As the players progress through Chapter 1, they encounter and defeat various bosses, each representing a different aspect of the mountain’s corruption. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, the frog guai who deceived townsfolk with his coveted oil, is revealed to be a grotesque creature, reflecting the deceit and greed that permeates the mountain. The Black Wind King, once a mighty guardian of the southern sea, returns with grand ambitions but is ultimately undone by his own failures and the betrayals of those around him.
In the end, Chapter 1 serves as a prelude to the greater trials that await, as the forces of greed, ambition, and betrayal set the stage for the epic journey that lies ahead in Black Myth: Wukong. The chapter paints a vivid picture of a land steeped in darkness, where even the mightiest beings are brought low by their desires, and where the true challenge lies not just in the battles ahead, but in overcoming the corruption within.
