Blader Crisis [ブレイダークライシス] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
While I have a few more videos set to private as I'm still getting caught up for the month, I very well couldn't leave this one private: another "rare" Doujin fighter from 1999, "Blader Crisis". Besides being one of the better FM95 games of the time, a little fun fact is that the main character of this game (Guy Cilverl) is a playable character in Alicuu's "Fighter's Kyodotai" (this team would go on many years later under the name "Neo Team F.K.", aka "FK Digital", to produce the cult-classic fighter, "Chaos Code"). This game was originally hosted on the "Famicom Runners High" website before eventually being lost in the mid 2000s and resurfaced on a Chinese website almost 15 years later in 2019. Bits and pieces of the game made its way prior into M.U.G.E.N but would not be shared or compiled in its original form for some time.
It's also worth noting that FM95 games are more volatile in modern operating environments than FM2nd games, which is part of the reason I don't share as many of them (I have several I've recompiled but can't get them to boot past the title screen, and I've been working around these games for many years now as most are aware). That said, it's a weapon-based medieval fantasy fighter with half a dozen characters and stages with a training character added. There are prototype-ish endings and also a unique bonus for players if you have the long lost "Companion Anime Game" CD that the dev shared with a handful of fans some twenty years ago. It's supposed to play a unique theme along with a special tentative animation for the game -- while I could not get the track to play, I was able to run what was finished of the animation and spliced it with the extended title theme (it shows a few characters that were planned for the game but ultimately never made the cut).
This is a very simple fighting game, but one that I like due to the originality of the characters. It's a bit slow and clunky compared to other FM games, but there's a few decent animations here and there and as FM95 games DO NOT have continues, the game has a progressive build in difficulty while still being fair (it isn't like a handful of the nigh impossible to beat FM95 games). Each character has three standard attack buttons (light/medium/heavy) as well as a "Special" Button and "Super" Button. The special button differs from character to character but executes a few basic attack functions (at the expense of a partial gauge) as well as a "Personal Action". Personal Actions can range from guard crushing skills to dodge abilities to guard counters and more. My favorite one is "Carol Freia" and her ability which allows her to summon spirits and greatly expand her combat options with fire, water, wind and earth abilities (such as pinning a character for a moment, launching them into the air, healing, etc.). I also like the animating character portraits in battle which are a neat little touch. The engine is structured in a way where you can't heavily abuse certain skills, but the game is still an early FM95 game at the end of the day, so... yeah.
Anyway, the characters all operate a little differently in terms of speed, attack defense, etc.. There's one charge type character, a few short-mid range character specialists (with Guy having at least one rekka move), a long range character, a trick character and a slow short-range character who also grapples a bit. It's not really anything fighting enthusiasts haven't seen before, but there's ground rolls and safe falls as well. If you want to try the game, you can get it at:

This is a video of the game in action going through one character playthrough. Enjoy.
