[Synopsis]
When I first played this game back in 1988, I borrowed it from a friend of mine, and I played the heck out of it in the weekend. This game was based on Blades of Steel arcade cabinet released by Konami in 1987. The NES version is like the arcade version, except there were no fight scenes in the arcade version, or the NES commercial for Konami products in the intermission scene. You could play with two players in this game, and this gave this game a lot of replay value. When I went over to my friends homes, we would play a lot of games in head to head mode or in co-op mode. Most of times only two people could play at a time. Today, people can connect to the internet, and hundreds of people can play at one time in games, like Mechwarrior Online, War Thunder, etc.
This game was very simple, and you can learn how to play it in minutes. You only have two buttons, one button is to hit the puck, and the other one is pass the puck to team members. When you get into a fight scene, you have the punch, and the block button. In this game, you always have to keep your eye on the puck, or your opponents will score. Nintendo released a hockey game called Ice Hockey in Jan 1988, and Konami released Blades of Steel 9 months after in the same year. Ice Hockey was commercial success with 2.42 million copies being sold. Blades of Steel didn't sell even come close to making that many sales, nor was it in the best selling NES video game list. Never the less, it was a fun game, and I thought it had better graphics than Ice Hockey. I enjoyed all the games Konami/Ultra released for the NES, most of the titles they released like this one were good.
