First Look
One on one arena fighters, especially those in fixed locations never sound very exciting, we have already witnessed a few arena battlers in VR with varying levels of success.
Blaston is fun to play, but boy do you need to be able agile, combat is full on and it is rare that a round will go deep into the allocated 2 minutes. This is a light hearted gladiatorial battler where you use a variety of guns to attempt to defeat your opponent. The battle begins with both opponents standing on their platform, with what feels like only a rooms distance between you, the timer counts down from 3 and then you grab the first weapon that spawns beside you and aim at your opponent.
The secret of success is to try to keep moving yourself, dodging incoming shots whilst attempting to second guess your opponents movement, gun shots very in speed and size depending on the weapon you select, scores and energy bars deplete as you are hit, headshots and body shots seem to score the highest damage.
The game design is cartoon based, your fighter is a dismembered body along with hands and head tracking your own body and limbs movement perfectly. Guns are also of cartoon design, very colourful and simple to use, simply grab and fire. The arena itself is a single room, you can decorate with banners which you can purchase with the credits you earn as you level up. You are watched by an animated crowd of characters similar in design to yourself. To be honest once the battle starts you won't notice your surroundings as you are purely focused on what your opponent is doing.
There is plenty to open up in the game, items become available for you the higher the level the more rare the items you are able to purchase with your hard earned credits. These items could be a new character design, armour, colour scheme or more powerful weapons. Any new weapons you buy can be swapped around in your loadout making for some unique combinations.
Blaston is a really nice surprise it has a sensible price point and i can see it becoming a bit of a cult hit, much like Ironlights, this is a much more frantic game, you need to be on the move all the time if you want to be competitive, but i have to say it is all very friendly, your opponent will great you with a salute or wave, applaud you in victory or give you the thumbs up. i love VR and it appears i am not alone.
