First look
As soon as i saw the title and visuals for Rhythm 'n Bullets i was interested, it ticks a lot of boxes for me, a shooting rhythm game with retro style visuals, count me in.
The shooting mechanics of the game are a nice twist on the usual shoot and aim, in that each of your weapons, they look like space craft, in each hand can have the bullets change colour, much like the classic shooter Ikaruga, you will need to match the bullet colour to the incoming enemy. There are 3 colours that you need to swap between and these are selected using the thumbstick on each controller. You are also aimed with a shield destroying combo, for those enemies that have shields, to access this simply hold the grip and them pull the trigger, once the shield is gone you are able to destroy the enemy using the right colour bullet.
Visually the game has retro vector visuals, these are really bright and clear, enemies are simple vector shapes that head towards a blue circular core that you are defending. The craft/gun in your grip has a nice design with the colour of each weapon shown on either wing to help you remember which direction to select.
Tracking works really well and i didn't experience any issues at all, flicking between weapons at first is tricky to remember which direction to move the stick and for the first couple of attempts, being left handed, i completely forgot i had a weapon in the other hand.
As the game progresses attacks become more varied and you will need to constantly swap between weapons, you are helped with power ups that appear from time to time such as slow down or missiles which cut through everything including shields. I am sure as you improve your skills the rhythm side of the game will become more easy to understand, for me this game simply became a matter of survival and defending the core and not worrying about hitting in time to the soundtrack.
If you have a fondness for retro games, definitely worth checking out, the visuals alone are worthy of a download and once you understand the gameplay there is some addiction in wanting to progress.
