The Lore
Many eons ago, an unimaginably advanced alien race, known as the Cretas, established a network of temporal portals spread throughout the galaxy. The Cretas were quite different from humans; the concept of relative linear time was alien to them. Cretas transformed time and space at will, operating with colossal energies. Eventually they broke free from the fetters of the material universe and vanished, never to be heard from again.However, their temporal network remained. For millions of years, mysterious monoliths have been waiting for those who can awaken them. From time to time, researchers of new, growing civilizations have discovered keys to activate these artifacts, but no one has comprehended the true secret of the network – the ability to travel not only through space, but through time.
Nevertheless, those who activated the monoliths found themselves traveling through the temporal network, whether they liked it or not, unknowingly spawning millions of their own counterparts from an infinite number of other time branches and lines. Sometimes these doubles are similar to their creators, like two peas in a pod, and sometimes they are very different...
The temporal network leads from monolith to monolith in many intricate paths. With the correct key, entering it is not so difficult, but going back into your world and into your time is practically impossible. Only the Cretas had the technology and intelligence capable of accounting for the millions of factors required to exit the network at the precise time and place that they intended.
Those who find themselves inside the network travel through portal after portal in search of their desired destination. To do so they must find a way to activate each portal. If successful, the travelers will leave through a portal near the activated monolith, but it is not known at what time, or in what reality, they will end up. If they are lucky, they will return home. But most likely, they will have to repeat this procedure over and over again.
Travelers come from a wide variety of races and times. Across the span of millions of years, an untold number of travelers have entered the network. Most of these wanderers sooner or later settle in a foreign land, but some, for various reasons, ceaselessly fight to activate portals in order to get to where they want to go.
They are called “seekers.”
They are scientists, archaeologists, occultists, and adventurers of all stripes. They are looking for power, wealth, knowledge, or just a way home, but they all must fight, since they are many, and each portal only has one key.
