Boot Camp/Combat School, 1987 Konami
Kind of cool game of TRACK & FIELD meets USMC Boot Camp, but the cool factor deflates later in the game as the challenge goes from unfair to ludicrous. Note that in many events where you play against another player, you don't have to beat them! Just qualify for the event within the time allowed. 8 events allow you to compete against a 2nd player or a computer player, or solo in others. The events are: Obstacle Course (race another player while vaulting walls and shimmying the monkey bars), Shooting Range #1 (destroy enough targets that pop up before the time expires), Ironman Race (jump rocks and puddles and swim/canoe your way to the finish line), Shooting Range #2 (the targets now move), Arm Wrestling (take down the opponent's arm in time), Shooting Range #3 (the controls are crap here-- move the cursor to one target at a time and avoid shooting the drill instructor images or you lose time), Fight The Drill Instructor (good luck.. he's way hard; use kicks and jump kicks to hope to knock down his energy bar), and Save The President From Terrorists (BATSHIT HARD! You get hit once by the enemy and you're dead! Play Kung-Fu Master, basically, and reach the end to free the President and end the game). The only difference between BOOT CAMP (US version) and COMBAT SCHOOL (pretty much the rest of the world) is the controls-- I believe the US version has a trackball and 2 buttons and COMBAT SCHOOL has a joystick and 2 buttons (which I prefer; MAME has trouble getting the trackball controls right and it's listed as NOT WORKING). The buttons have different functions for each event; for the Obstacle Course one is RUN and one JUMPS at the walls; Shooting Ranges are both to fire at the targets; Iron Man Race uses one to run and one to jump; Arm Wrestling requires alternate bashing of both buttons; for the Drill Instructor fight one kicks and the other jumps (no punch button?) and together you jump kick; and one jumps and the other kicks for the Rescue The President From Terrorists event (why are they sending a raw boot camp graduate??). If you just barely miss out on completing an event, you get one last chance (and only that one in the game): you must do 5 pull ups within the allotted time (and it's SUPER easy; alternate buttons quickly). You can then bypass the event you failed. Fun game at first with some amusing voice samples, but the difficulty is far more cruel and unusual punishment than anything the real Boot Camp could dish out. Darn it!!!
