This is the first installment of the beloved Silent Hill series of psychological survival horror video games. The game was developed by Team Silent and published by Konami on January 31, 1999, for the first Playstation console.
After losing his wife, Jodie, Harry Mason and his adopted daughter, Cheryl, head to the town of Silent Hill for a vacation. After a car accident, Harry wakes to find Cheryl missing. Searching for her reveals that the town of Silent Hill is anything *but* a vacation spot.
Because this was released for the original Playstation, controls are different than they typically are for modern games (and thus, harder for me to get used to). Turning and movement is often more easily controlled using the D-pad, although it can also be accomplished somewhat via the RS. LS is for looking around (in a limited fashion). L2 will shift perspective temporarily to whatever direction Harry is facing. R2 will aim (if Harry has a weapon using aim, like a gun). ✖ attacks (shoots a gun, swings a pipe, etc.), △ shows the map, ◯ backs out of a menu, and ⬜ makes Harry run (held while using D-pad to move). L1 and R1 are used for sidestepping an enemy, while Select accesses inventory and Start just pauses the game.
While searching for Cheryl the night of their arrival, Harry is overwhelmed and knocked out. He is saved by the cop Cybil Bennett, who dragged him into a cafe. She gives him a pistol for protection before heading out to continue her own investigation of the town. Left on his own, Harry proceeds from building to building, desperate to find his daughter. How many time will he die while I try to fight enemies while getting used to strange controls? Will Harry find Cheryl, or just more nightmares in this doomed town?
