What is Bound By Flame?

Bound by Flame is a heroic fantasy RPG that has you playing as a mercenary possessed by a demon in flames. In the grasp of the demon, you must choose between the demonic power within you, and your humanity. Should you choose the latter, you must repel the demonic influence and develop truly heroic skills.

As dangers and enemies close down on you, always more fearsome and terrifying, you will be tempted to yield a bit more of your soul to the demon that possesses you in order to gain more power… and as the demon gains more of your soul, your physical transformation becomes more obvious.

Bound by Flame is an ambitious and far-reaching RPG that contains all of the typical ingredients you expect from a heroic fantasy game; in particular, it offers a great freedom of action and choice throughout your adventure.

The decisions you make are far from superficial and always bear, albeit later than sooner, heavy consequences on the way the story unfolds, on yourself, and, last but not least, on the very end of the game. These decisions first depend on the development of your character. Throughout the story and the successful quests, you gain some experience that enables you to develop your avatar.

You have three talent trees through which you must choose the way you play and fight, from a skillful warrior armed with heavy swords, to a stealthy fighter and dagger expert. But maybe you will be tempted to destroy your enemies with your demon’s powerful long-range fire magic spells.

Your choices also influence the in-game dialogs, as dozens of characters step in either as allies or enemies. Be careful, therefore, not to get on the wrong side of a character that might play a very big part later on in the game... unless making a new enemy is exactly your intention! According to your actions, some allies might even turn against you. So watch your back... and your language!

Finally, the way in which you decide to interact with your demon also influences your character and the story. Your allies will change according to the freedom you grant your demon and according to the amount of humanity you decide to shed. Some of your companions may even decide to leave you on the way if they resent the person you have become... or if you suddenly decide to betray them!

In Bound by Flame, real time battles combine tactical skills, dynamics and showmanship. Clashes are demanding, requiring both tactics and reflexes. Whilst it can be tempting to just throw yourself in the melee without any action plan, it is best to have a strategy of attack lest you become overwhelmed by opponents that are actually much tougher than they looked!

Available to you is a whole array of strikes and moves and, according to your specialization, you also have skills and special powers that should help you to overcome your opponents. Parry or dodge their blows, counter-attack, break their guard, stun them... or don’t be so subtle and just burn them down with the mighty flames of your demon’s powers!

Whatever you choose, always remain vigilant. Your enemies will fight as a team and will attack you from behind at the first opportunity. Therefore, be careful where you stand, and always keep sight of the enemies your are fighting against!

Every time you go up a level, you gain skill points that you can use as you wish in the three talent trees. The talent trees represent the three facets of your character in combat: Martial Techniques represent your skills in two-handed weapon wielding; Fire Magic enables you to improve on fire demon spell casting; finally, the Way of the Shadow corresponds to your ability to wield daggers and merge into the night. Spend your skill points wisely, and you could specialize, gain new powers or improve your various skills.

You are a warrior of the Freeborn-Blades, a group of mercenaries known and feared throughout Vertiel. But as the Deadarmy breaks into a ritual organized by your latest employers, things turn sour and you suddenly become literally possessed by a fire demon. After your initial surprise, and that of your companions, you start to feel the power of the demon coursing through your veins... but this power, should you decide to use it, comes at a price: your very humanity.

Crafting is important in Bound by Flame. Search the environment and examine the bodies of your opponents to find many components enabling you to make new pieces of equipment, consumables such as ammunition for your crossbow or potions, and upgrades to improve your own equipment: a guard for your sword, spaulders for your breastplate, etc.
