Brandish: The Dark Revenant is a PSP remake of an earlier dungeon crawler by Falcom. I played it a couple years ago and really loved it--you may have seen that I have already covered several of the Brandish Piano Collections tracks. The SNES version was released in the US, but it is very disconcerting when the camera rotates the entire view around the player instantly. The PSP remake fixes this and adds a little animation to smooth it out. The game is full of puzzles and traps, and for me, it scratched the same itch as La-Mulana despite being a top-down action RPG instead of a Metroidvania. I highly recommend it and I hope that Falcom ports it to modern systems. There are three other games in the series, and Brandish 2 has a fan translation at least, but I haven't tried any of the others yet.
As far as I remember, this track only plays once in the game when you encounter the statue in the Ruins. I have also seen it with the title "Discouraging View," presumably because the statue shows a miniature preview of the mazelike dungeons you have yet to explore, but I am unsure if this was ever an official track name in the US.
This was my second entry for Dwelling of Duels, a VGM community focused on themed monthly contests where submissions and voting are done anonymously, then the rankings and artists are revealed afterwards.
