If you love the Breath of Fire series there is a spiritual successor in the works and on Kickstarter called Tears of Magic that is trying to capture the RPG magic that was Breath of Fire and make a new RPG IP .. Join me as I explore and explain this Breath of Fire spiritual successor : Tears of Magic the New RPG today! Enjoy!
Breath of Fire is a classic RPG series from the Super Nintendo to the Playstation and Tears of Magic is trying to capture that magic as a spiritual successor to the Breath of Fire series. Capcom, who currently owns the rights to Breath of Fire has let the IP sit dormant and although I think there is a high possibility of seeing a Breath of Fire collection at some point in the future, the possibilities of a true NEW Breath of Fire seem so far away. Thankfully, the team at Good Old Pixels is at work on a new RPG called Tears of Magic that takes heavy inspiration from the classic Breath of Fire series.
Now, we are going to be looking at what exactly Tears of Magic is going for and how it links and will be nostalgic and enjoyable for Breath of Fire fans, but first, let's talk about the state of Tears of Magic : It is currently, at the time of this recording, on KickStarter looking to hit goal for the development of the game. As you can see from the small amount of footage available, they have already started making this RPG, and there is a list of their team on the Kickstarter page as well. I have links to their kickstarter campaign in the description if you would like to support them, they are looking to acquire a goal of 90 thousand and they want the game to launch in 2025, so a 3 year development cycle.
Of course Good Old Pixel is a small indy team, but amongst their team is one of the people who worked on Breath of Fire as a composer and is the most famous of the group, but that's enough to give them a bit of clout, and hopefully they make it to goal. Now let's look at the game itself and what they are trying to make:
As you can see, it uses beautiful pixel art for the characters and monsters and has a 3D background. This is a great artstyle which reminds me of Breath of Fire 3 and 4, and I absolutely love when pixels and 3D backgrounds are mixed together, it's just a wonderful combination that feels old school and modern at the same time and I miss the days that this was more prevalent like in the 32-bit era of RPGs. You may remember the multiple endings in Breath of Fire 4, and it looks like Tears of Magic is attempting to do something similiar, decisions made in the game will impact how your story plays out and there is a major focus on character development for the story.
And speaking of story, the main character was born as a dragon in a world where this hasn't been seen in over a century. Once his powers are used, the disasterous effect causes him to seek out trianing to hone this skill and find his place and meaning in the world. Now apparently you will be making the main character who can be either male or female and with some options for how he or she will look as well as some personality options. One thing seems for certain though, you will need to join the Seekers to unlock your Dragon Powers.
