Brutal Wolfenstein: When The Thing Hits The Fan
56Okay, honestly this map is just very bad level design, the rest of the game isn't terrible so it feels bad to single out this one map out of 60. Buuut it's funny and it's a cool map for pointing out what doesn't work well in the mod. Things to note:
- When they are placed randomly or they are let to wander around the map flamethrower enemies completely break the game. No, I don't want to get killed from full HP for guessing wrong on which corner to check first, thank you. You could argue that this is how the original game worked too though and you'd be right.
- Making soldiers throw smoke is just a really, really bad mechanic for a game like this. It's an arcade shooter, don't blind me, there are more than enough effects that already do that.
- The purple BFG thing has a giant hitbox for some reason so your shots just get stuck in the environment a lot.
- Explosion radiuses are ridiculously huge which makes the use of any kind of explosive a gamble. Grenades also have the hitbox issue too so a lot of times your grenade just pops back in your face instead of getting around a corner as a grenade should. They also blow up way too quick after being thrown so a lot of times you can't escape from a bad grenade throw.
- For a "brutal mod" the gore is really janky, overblown and it's a performance killer. Would love to disable or reduce it as I never liked it when a gameplay mod just makes half the map red, hiding textures and switches anyway.
- Harder difficulties lack any kind of balance whatsoever, like I can't for the life of me understand what purpose does it serve to basically make enemis shoot you the millisecond you enter their line of sight (again: was a thing in the original game too, it was awful there too). On Death Incarnate health packs are also halved in effectiveness which honestly just breaks most episodes since you won't be able to restack after bad fights. It's not an exaggeration to call Death Incarnate and Über unplayable which is why you don't see much gameplay on that difficulty on Youtube.
Overall this is a great mod but it has a few annoying issues that kind of stop it from being a complete win.
