This is the story of Peter Reed, just your average person among countless. Likewise, it was supposed to be just that, another ordinary day of hiking in the woods. But as misfortune would have it, a sudden thunderstorm soon forces him to seek shelter in an old bunker; however, he quickly realises that the front door which he just shut behind himself cannot be opened again without a key, one that could be anywhere. Thus, equipped with nothing but a flashlight, he sets off to explore the bunker in search of it – not yet aware of the fact that the cold surrounding walls would rather he stayed forever.

“Bunker 16”, a short first-person horror game developed and released by Game Jolt creator freeman08, used to be quite popular when it first came out, attracting the attention of many. Years later, it pleases me to report that it has barely lost any of its charm. Despite the somewhat simplistic presentation, just exploring the (mostly) same areas over and over, “Bunker 16” manages to combine familiar but still effective tropes in order to create a lurking sense of dread. Above all, the game’s atmosphere still holds up today and achieves that which horror should always seek to accomplish – slowly but surely tearing down the player’s mind. Rather than offering an overabundance of jump scares, this one knows when to hold back and only utilises a small number of them, instead focusing on unsettling music, ambiance and sound effects. In conclusion, “Bunker 16” features a little bit of everything, including an interesting story, but does not outstay its welcome and therefore deserves to be remembered - do be careful, however, for those who linger within might just become a memory themselves.
