WELCOME TO THE SPOOKY WORLD OF SHORT INDIE HORROR GAMES…
***************************************************************
This is the story of Namie Matsuda, a young lady who has just finished moving into her new house, which was rented for a too-good-to-be-true price. It seemed like a good idea at first – an affordable abode with nice interior, the neighbourhood all around peaceful and quiet. But following a closer inspection of the rooms, she soon realises that there might be more to the house than what the landlord was willing to share with her – something that could seriously threaten her very life.

“From Next Door”, a short mystery-horror game developed for the 2016 Pixel Horror Jam, focuses first and foremost on slow and gradual build-up of tension-filled atmosphere. Due to its rather silent nature and story-driven exploration, a feeling of lurking dread is present throughout and serves to wear down the player’s fragile sense of safety little by little. Above all, “From Next Door’s” creator – SpaceZeta – drew most of her inspiration from the works of Japanese horror manga artist Junji Ito; specifically, the one titled “The Window Next Door”. Thus, both the eerie and the bizarre are at the forefront of this title and deliver an intriguing experience, which blends the uncannily realistic with horror of the sort that cannot be fathomed – much in the way of a Lovecraftian story. Subsequently, one may find him or herself asking after a while: “I am anticipating something bad, have been for some time now – but when will it happen? And what will it be?” Personally speaking, it is still quite amazing how such “simplistic” games are often capable of providing the most unnerving frights, and I would definitely add “From Next Door” to the much beloved category of Home Invasion Horror, just with a touch of the Itoesque supernatural in this case. It certainly gets a recommendation from me, for I do feel that more fans of horror should know about this particular one.
