This was it. This was the game that put this series and Criterion on the map for good. It doesn't look like much, but it's simplicity was part of its draw. It wasn't about licensing real cars and trying to copy the NFS formula. It was about putting challenging, addictive racing back as the primary focus. Every race, you aimed to be better, achieve perfection, and get a gold medal in every event. When the game gets frustrating, it gets more gripping. It doesn't have the ease of takedowns or the ability to use boost on demand, but that's what makes it unique to the series and really the one true starting point for the rest of it. You basically earn your stripes through this game and the rest of the series is just bonnus sprinkles.
