[Burst Fighter] Expert ALL CLEAR (Score: 61,844,611)
This game is quite mediocre, but I was one of the beta testers and as you can see, I like it enough to record a run. There is that.
Burst Fighter is a vertical wide-screen shmup. For some reason a lot of indie developers thought that's a good idea. I at least believe it can be a good idea, but it must be matched with fine tuning. This game is one of those bad examples. And I haven't mentioned other parts that is not good when it's not wide-screen!
In Burst Fighter you can shoot and bomb. Well, that sounds simple, and that's okay. The problem is to use them at all. The bombing is fine. It recharges over time, but can't surpass 3 bomb stocks. The shooting is the big problem. For full power you need to hold down the shoot button and slow your movement down. But to keep your fire rate and keep your speed up you need to button mash the shoot button! That's not healthy and in this day and age a built-in rapid fire button is a must! What were they thinking!? Feedback had been given since beta too, but they didn't listen!
Don't get me started with the bad loadout balance! You can choose the Core (bomb), Wings (Shot 1) and Weapon (Shot 2). Any core is fine, I think. Blade has the best DPS. Meanwhile Wings and Weapon are misleading. Wing is to decide the forward shot. Weapon is to decide the side, wider shot. You can mix and match, but some of them have very weak DPS and it's borderline useless! Arc and Lancer is the recommended one if you want to play it at all. Otherwise you'll get rained with large enemies because the side homing shot can't hit anything in front of you because they don't feel like homing into anything at all! Don't even think to use Blade. The stage design don't give many opportunities to use it. It doesn't even cancel bullets! Don't!
Last but not least the stage design employs a good lot of cheap tactics that you must memorize to survive by bombing. Bulldung from the sides? Check. Full-screen laser without telegraphs? Check. Awkward enemy positioning? Check. Hitbox doesn't get shown? Check! And the bullets BLEND! Who thought it's a good idea to give very bright background and make the bullets red when the enemies have red as their main color scheme!? There is a lot of resources like 1 life is worth 2 hits, but you still have to put up with these cheap designs!
Scoring system is also not satisfying. It's mainly get as many items while keep your life maximum as much as possible, but the difference of score is really miniscule. That's not satisfying to see!
Yeah, it's not unplayable, but playing seriously can give you agony. In fact, I recommend playing this to learn from its mistakes. Don't blend the bullets, think thrice before making a vert wide screen shmup, and GIVE, PROPER, TELEGRAPHS, BEFORE ANY, FAST, ATTACKS!
Oh, one last thing. The music is bad. Open up a soundtrack from another game for your sanity. For example, Eschatos.
