Have you ever heard of Gradius Syndrome? Behold, the very game that started it all!

At least one of the ports. I love this port and for a game of its time it ages surprisingly well!

In Gradius you can shoot and you can apply upgrades by collecting the upgrade items, then pick the one you like. There is rank system that scales directly with your current total upgrade, but it won't be much of a problem when you have the Shield. The ideal strategy is to get the shield ASAP first and after you're satisfied with your current upgrade, keep the upgrade cursor standby on Shield so you can reload it fast. You have a good amount of leniency to keep this status quo.

Then comes Gradius Syndrome. When you get hit, your power will be reset to your absolute weakest! You'll be lucky enough to be given a single power up enough to gain a speed up at the start! And the rank will get lowered! But on some segments recovery is very difficult! You may be given a lot of extends, but that will be spent mainly on recovery process. Strangely enough Gradius 1's Gradius Syndrome isn't that bad compared to, like, Kyukyoku Tiger. First, you have the Shield, so there is room for mistakes, second, the game is short for a single loop, so the pressure to no miss isn't as high as Kyukyoku Tiger!

Gradius is a must play! To me, while the game is great, compared to new releases today it's still pretty old. But it will give you the taste of one of the best shmups available at the time that is still fun to this day. The NES version is much recommended to be treated as the Novice mode, so to speak.

On this run 1-2 and 1-4 are skipped. As you try the game again and again it's hard to not skip on purpose...
